The Leica R9 is a handcrafted professional high performance camera. The camera has a high-contrast viewfinder image that works well for focusing and checking the depth of field. The body is made out of solid metal which makes it durable, and the controls are placed to be within an easy and intuitive reach of the fingers.

The Leica R9 uses selective and integral metering along with a multi-field metering system. There are several different configurations for the drives such as the manual advance lever for a quiet by hand wind, the quiet and convenient Leica Motor Winder R9 and the high speed professional Leica Motor Drive R9 which increases the bulk of the camera substantially.
